So, the other day i stopped by Half-Price, and discovered to my delight most of the books in the Phule series by Robert Asprin. I've read the first two, never picked up the others before.

UGH. First off, if you are going to let another author collaborate with you, please make sure they can successfully imitate the "voice" of the series. Secondly, make sure that their word choices don't go "clunk", and that they actually paid some attention to the details in your previous books.

I started the third book in the series, and the first chapter was great. Could not force myself to read all the way through the second chapter. The characters were speaking wrong, the word choices were so off it was painful, and everything clunked like it was on square wheels. I'm highly disappointed, because I know there's a lot of "what happened next" with these characters I'd really come to enjoy, and I won't be able to read it, because the offness factor is too high for me to tolerate.

Thankfully, I have the next compendium in the Miles Vorkosigan series, so my disappointment is easily distracted by the new shiny. ;)

I had trouble with book 3 too, but it picked up again in 4. 5 felt alot like "been there, done that". 4 is worth a read if you've got nothing else on your stack.

I have other stuff, but I might try 4 sometime and see if I like it.

I read the third book. I don't think I could manage the others after that.

So, which Vorkosigan's have you read now?

I've read all of them, actually. This is me both re-reading and slowly acquiring them for my own collection. :) I've just started re-reading Brothers In Arms.

Happy birthday! I misread your username in [livejournal.com profile] shadesong's post today, and was like, "What? MY birthday was in March." So, um, happy birthday to my almost-username-twin! :D
